FOR HCT AND HEAVY VEHICLE COMBINATIONS

A complete solution for the trailer rear chassis

Part No.

An increasing number of semi-trailers are used in HCT combinations, where an additional trailer is coupled behind the semi-trailer. However, few trailers are originally designed for the high loads generated by a rear coupling. By planning for the coupling already at the trailer design stage, the installation can be integrated into the chassis. This provides a robust and flexible solution that can be dimensioned to meet the requirements of UN Regulation No. 55 as well as the chassis stiffness and strength requirements.

With a dedicated mounting space in the chassis, VBG standard drawbeams and end plates from the truck product range can be used. At the same time, VBG underrun protection compliant with UN R58.03 can be integrated. This provides a well-designed complete solution for the trailer rear chassis, using proven VBG components.

Vehicle combinations and loads vary between markets, ranging from conventional HCT combinations to longer and heavier combinations, such as those used in Finland.

Use the VBG Performance Value Calculator to determine which drawbeam is suitable for your vehicle combination: DB 75V-2 or DB 75V-3.

Benefits of integrating the solution from the start

  • Loads are absorbed by a chassis structure dimensioned for the coupling forces.
  • The drawbeam does not need to be attached to the floor, body or other parts that are not designed for these loads.
  • Great flexibility to adapt the width, height and coupling position to the trailer design. Option to integrate VBG underrun protection as part of the solution.
  • Standard VBG components simplify spare parts management and use well-established installation methods.
  • Standardised attachment
  • Quick and easy mounting
  • Can be supplied factory-fitted

How it works

1. Prepare the chassis

The trailer manufacturer creates a mounting space in the rear section of the chassis in accordance with VBG interface requirements.

2. Install the drawbeam
A VBG drawbeam is installed with end plates and, when required, spacers. A maximum of two spacers per side may be used, with a total thickness of no more than 20 mm.

3. Install the coupling and accessories
The coupling and accessories, such as brackets for electrical and air connections, are installed on the drawbeam. The components can also be supplied pre-assembled on the drawbeam.

A complete solution for the trailer rear chassis

With a chassis-integrated VBG solution, the trailer manufacturer gets more than a drawbeam. Coupling equipment, chassis components and underrun protection can be combined into a well-designed complete solution, adapted to the trailer design and application.

This provides:

✓ A solution developed for HCT and heavy vehicle combinations
✓ Lower development risk with proven VBG components
✓ More efficient and easier installation
✓ Flexibility for different trailer designs
✓ Easy access to spare parts and service
✓ Option to integrate underrun protection
✓ A system solution adapted to the relevant requirements of UN R55 and UN R58.03

Combine with VBG underrun protection

An additional advantage of the chassis-integrated solution is the option to use VBG underrun protection products compliant with R58.03, such as UHAP 180. This makes it possible to combine the drawbeam, coupling and underrun protection into a well-designed complete solution.

By considering both the coupling solution and underrun protection already when designing the trailer rear chassis, the conditions are created for an efficient installation using components from VBG standard range.
